“Unions vs Taxpayers” battle heats up

On February 18, 2011, in Politics, by Eric Odom

We’re now several days into mass protests organized by powerful unions to confront a proposed $300 million dollar cut across the state of Wisconsin. Apparently today is no exception, and teachers feel their unions are still more important than students.

The state’s largest school district has joined those that have canceled classes due to teacher shortages caused by union protests at the state Capitol.

The fact that teachers are siding with their unions against students, taxpayers and a Republican led legislature/Governor’s office is outrageous. But that’s just the beginning.

As we learned yesterday, Democrat Senators missed the memo on what Democracy means. The people of Wisconsin voted in a Republican Governor and Republican majority. Yet, Democrats fled the state in order to avoid voting on the bill.

Democrats in the state Senate threw a temper tantrum Thursday – essentially they took their ball and went home.

Actually, they didn’t go home. They apparently went to Illinois, just out of reach of their obligations.

By boycotting an expected vote on Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill, they were able to prevent action on the measure. Twenty senators are required for a quorum; the Republicans have only 19.

Unbelievable. The Democrats were actually ordered to appear for the vote, and every single one of them left the state. Now the Governor has ordered state troopers to the homes of the Senators in an effort to bring one in for the vote.

MADISON – According to the Wisconsin senate majority leader, the Governor’s office is sending out state troopers to go after Wisconsin’s Democratic Senate members to bring in a vote on Governor Walker’s budget bill which would dramatically limit government workers union’s ability to negotiate many of their benefits.

“They are prepared to dispatch state troopers to go out to some of the residences of some of the senators,” said Republican State Senator Scott Fitzgerald on Newsradio 620 WTMJ’s “Midday with Charlie Sykes.”

Several of the Democrat Senators have taken to Twitter and Facebook, leaving messages that completely miss the boat.

Senator Taylor, for example, tweeted “NO! DEMS are SHOWING/STANDING UP for the PEOPLE!”

Actually, Senator, you’re standing up for the unions that helped get you elected. The “People” elected a new Governor who campaigned on cutting back spending… which is exactly what he’s doing.

Of course, a Unions vs Taxpayers battle wouldn’t be complete with President Barack Obama putting his own political machine into action. Can you guess which side he’s fighting for?

Of course.

Obama accused Scott Walker, the state’s new Republican governor, of unleashing an “assault” on unions in pushing emergency legislation that would change future collective-bargaining agreements that affect most public employees, including teachers.

The president’s political machine worked in close coordination Thursday with state and national union officials to get thousands of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in other state capitals.

Their efforts began to spread, as thousands of labor supporters turned out for a hearing in Columbus, Ohio, to protest a measure from Gov. John Kasich (R) that would cut collective-bargaining rights.

Fortunately for the People/Taxpayers, Republicans in Wisconsin are digging in and preparing to fight back.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) says his party has been emboldened by massive protests against his controversial budget plan.

Walker said demonstrators who filled the state capitol building in Madison and the boycott by state Senate Democrats — some of whom fled the state in protest — have steeled the resolve of members of his party.

“If anything, I think it’s made the Republicans in the Assembly and the Senate stronger,” he told Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren in an interview Thursday night. “They’re not going to be bullied. They’re not going to be intimidated.”

A war with unions is long over-due. They’re bankrupting states, bankrolling leftist politicians and campaigns, and they’re not at all looking out for the “People.”

Let Wisconsin be a shining example to the nation… Democrats are the party of special interests. What’s happening in Wisconsin should leave no doubt of that.

I see the ‘crisis’ in Wisconsin as the federal government reacting to a state that is trying to maintain any autonomy.
The surest way to enslave people is to make them dependent. If Wisconsin can balance its budget, then Wisconsin can resist any offers of ‘loans’ from the federal government.
Remember that the federal government took over public education by first offering ‘funding’ and then making it contingent on following the federal government’s rules.
Similarly, during the 1970′s the federal government used funding of highways as the bludgeon to get states to enforce the 55 mph speed limit.
Only our federal government can make dollars appear out of thin air. The federal government appears to want all states to become fiscal basket cases so that then the federal government can ‘rescue’ the states with ‘funding’. That funding, of course, being contingent on doing what ever the federal government dictates.
Of course the hidden tax of inflation will bring every one down, but I don’t think that bothers the present administration.
So my question is , why aren’t more states emulating Wisconsin and New Jersey?

I am cheering so hard with the likes of Walker and Christie! I would sit, ride, stand and walk with Walker! My only hope is that they don’t cave in!!!!!!!

I’m a retired teacher-I always resented the bullying tactics of CTA when they demanded I pay dues in exchange for union protection/collective bargaining etc. We had no choice! Then they used those revenues to further their political agenda (which were diametrically opposed to my views)
I particularly resented the obsene salaries ,perks & benefits union employees recieved. I hope someone will investigate corruption in the unions.
I’m 100% behind Gov.Walker—and the Tea Party! Thank you for all you do!
